MUSD Elementary Dress Code

MUSD Elementary student dress code supports equitable educational access and is written in a manner that does not reinforce stereotypes. The primary responsibility for a student’s attire resides with the student and their parents/guardians. The school district is responsible for seeing that student attire does not interfere with the health or safety of any student; that student attire does not contribute to a hostile or intimidating atmosphere for any student; and that dress code enforcement does not reinforce or increase marginalization or oppression of anyone.

THE FOLLOWING RULES GOVERN STUDENT DRESS AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE:

Clothing must be:

  • Free of offensive or violent language, pictures, or symbols.
  • May not be drug or alcohol related.
  • May not contain inappropriate patches, drawings, or writings.
  • May not be gang related, as determined by the MUSD  administration.

All students must wear

  • clothing on their bottom half that fully covers the buttocks and intimate areas, and does not reveal underwear or personal areas when bending down, reaching up, or sitting. Sleepwear, swimwear, blankets, and slippers are not acceptable in the educational environment.
  • All students must wear clothing on their top half that has a front, back, and sides. This clothing must contain straps or sleeves that connect the front and back. Clothing with an upper and lower garment must touch and not reveal midriff. Undergarments and bare chests may not be visible through the arm holes of the garment. As such, tube tops, halter tops, and muscle shirts are not allowed at MUSD elementary schools.
  • Hats, sunglasses, cap, hoodies, or non-religious head coverings may be limited on campuses as determined by the administration and/or teachers.
  • Footwear must have a back or strap that connects the footwear to the student’s foot.

Any dress, grooming, or appearance that disrupts, or tends to disrupt the educational process, or affect the health or safety of individuals shall be prohibited (Ed Code 48900, subsection k; 35161, 35183, 352191.1; C.A.C. Title V, Section 302; and Board Policies 5135, 5135.1, and 5137)

OUR VALUES ARE:

  • All students should be able to dress comfortably for school without fear of, or actual, unnecessary discipline or body shaming.
  • All students and staff should understand that they are responsible for managing their own personal “distractions” without regulating individual students’ clothing/self-expression.
  • Teachers can focus on teaching without the additional and often uncomfortable burden of dress code enforcement.
  • Students should not face unnecessary barriers to school attendance.
  • Reasons for conflict and inconsistent discipline should be minimized whenever possible.

Parents and guardians who send their student to MUSD Elementary Schools accept the judgment of the Administration as final in matters of school policy and procedures, including dress code.
